Slalom Skiing
Slalom is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline, involving skiing between poles or gates. These are spaced more closely than those in giant slalom, super-G, super giant slalom and Downhill (ski competition), downhill, necessitating quicker and shorter turns. Internationally, the sport is contested at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, and at the Olympic Winter Games. History The term slalom comes from the Morgedal/Seljord dialect of the Norwegian language, Norwegian word "slalåm": "sla", meaning "slightly inclining hillside", and "låm", meaning "track after skis". Tamara McKinney
Tamara McKinney (born October 16, 1962) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. She won four World Cup season titles, most notably the 1983 overall, the first American woman title holder for a quarter century. McKinney's other three season titles were in giant slalom (1981, 1983) and slalom (1984). She was a world champion in the combined event in 1989, her final year of competition. Her half-brother Steve McKinney was a world-record holding speed skier, setting seven world records and breaking his own record twice. Life and career Born in Lexington, Kentucky, the diminutive McKinney (, ) grew up in Squaw Valley, California, the youngest of seven children. Irene Epple
Irene Epple-Waigel (; born 18 June 1957) is a German former alpine skier. She won a total of 11 Alpine Skiing World Cup races and two World Cups, in giant slalom and combined (both in 1982). She also won a silver medal at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in giant slalom. In the 1978 FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships at Garmisch-Partenkirchen she won the silver medal in the downhill. On 9 January 1983 she won the first women's World Cup Super-G race, held in Verbier. In 1992 she completed her medical studies in Munich, and in November 1994 married Theo Waigel, who was the German Finance Minister from 1989 to 1998. Roswitha Steiner
Roswitha Stadlober (née Steiner) (born 14 June 1963 in Radstadt, Salzburg) is an Austrian former alpine skier. Career She concluded her career at the end of the 1987/1988 season by clinching her second Slalom World Cup title, also winning her last race in Aspen. She is married to Alois Stadlober, a former Austrian cross-country skier and world champion at the 1999 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. Their son Luis Stadlober and daughter Teresa Stadlober are also competitive cross-country skiers. Roswitha has served as a member of the executive committee of the Austrian Ski Federation since 2011. Małgorzata Tlałka (born 27 April 1963) is a Polish-French former alpine skier. From 1986 to 1991 she competed for France under the name of Malgorzata Tlalka-Mogore or Malgorzata Mogore-Tlalka. Petra Wenzel (born 20 November 1961 in Grabs, Saint Gallen, Switzerland) is a Liechtensteiner former alpine skier who competed in the 1980 Winter Olympics and 1984 Winter Olympics. Career Wenzel made her World Cup debut in 1979 at Lake Placid, finishing 18th in the downhill.
